How Work World Made Shopify Enterprise-ReadyAcross 30+ Stores

Work World replaced an aging point-of-sale system with Shopify and Shopify POS, then needed Shopify to do things it does not do natively: a digital corporate voucher program and store operations synced with NetSuite. Red Van built a custom voucher application, an ERP-agnostic API layer, and Shopify POS extensions for purchase orders, cycle counts, and transfers, launched in Fall 2025.

Who is Work World?

Work World is the largest specialty retailer of workwear, boots, and gear, with more than 30 stores across the Western United States.

The company operates under the Work World, Whistle Workwear, and Willy's Discount Workwear banners, providing premium brands, expert product knowledge, and service that outfits essential workers with high-quality gear. A meaningful share of its business comes through corporate accounts that issue workwear credits to their employees, which is why the voucher program is not a peripheral feature.

What problem did Work World need to solve?

Work World chose Shopify and Shopify POS to modernize retail operations, then found that Shopify's standard features could not cover its two most important business processes.

The first was the voucher program. Corporate customers use it to give employees workwear credits, and it has to handle different discount structures, product restrictions, bulk distribution, revocation, and detailed reporting, connect in real time with NetSuite, and support redemption both online and in store. It was running on paper. The second was store operations. Shopify includes basic tools for purchase orders, transfers, and inventory adjustments, but does not natively connect those to external systems, and Shopify POS does not support workflows like advanced shipping notices and cycle counts. Work World needed Shopify extended to enterprise requirements without losing the ease of use that made it the right choice in the first place.

Requirements that defined the architecture

  • Replace a paper-based voucher system with a digital omnichannel one
  • Support complex voucher rules, distribution, revocation, and reporting
  • Connect voucher redemption to NetSuite in real time
  • Extend Shopify POS for cycle counts and advanced shipping notices
  • Manage purchase orders, transfers, and adjustments against NetSuite
  • Keep NetSuite as the single source of truth across every location

How did Red Van solve it?

Red Van designed and built custom Shopify solutions that met Work World's enterprise needs while keeping Shopify at the center of the retail experience: a proprietary voucher application, an ERP-agnostic API layer to NetSuite, and Shopify POS extensions for advanced retail workflows.

The voucher application turned a paper process into a digital, omnichannel system where Work World configures complex programs, assigns administrators to manage and distribute vouchers, and customers redeem online or in store. Behind it sits use-case-specific business logic that simplifies financial reporting and liability tracking. The ERP integration was built as an agnostic API layer so the Shopify customizations communicate reliably with NetSuite, with Celigo managing real-time data mappings and synchronizations. That integration did more than connect systems. It unlocked operational capability Shopify did not previously have.

What the platform includes

Custom Voucher Application

A proprietary app that turns paper vouchers into a digital omnichannel system, supporting complex program setup, administrator roles, bulk distribution, revocation, and redemption both online and in store.

Financial Reporting and Liability Tracking

Use-case-specific business logic built into the voucher app that simplifies financial reporting and liability tracking, which is where paper-based voucher programs usually break down.

ERP-Agnostic API Layer

An API layer built to be ERP-agnostic, so Shopify customizations communicate reliably with NetSuite today and are not locked to it tomorrow.

Celigo Real-Time Synchronization

Celigo managing real-time data mappings and synchronizations between Shopify and NetSuite, keeping inventory and order data accurate across every location.

Purchase Order and Receiving Workflows

ERP-generated purchase orders flowing through to the POS, with receiving via advanced shipping notice (ASN) or scan, plus packing slips and status tracking.

Cycle Counts and Transfers

Full and partial cycle counts with approval processes, store-to-store transfers, inventory adjustments, and label printing, none of which Shopify POS supports natively.

Role-Based Security Matrix

A security matrix giving associates and managers exactly the access their role requires, so modern tools reach the store floor without opening up the whole system.

What were the results?

Work World launched in Fall 2025 with Shopify elevated to meet enterprise needs, making it a viable alternative to the legacy systems it replaced. A once-manual voucher process is now digital, flexible, and omnichannel, driving efficiency for corporate clients and their employees. Store associates use modern tools for inventory, receiving, and transfers, all integrated with NetSuite as a single source of truth.

  • Enterprise-ready Shopify with ERP integration, voucher management, and inventory extensions
  • Paper voucher program replaced with a digital omnichannel system
  • Real-time NetSuite synchronization across every location
  • Purchase orders, receiving, cycle counts, and transfers on modern store tools
  • Simplified financial reporting and liability tracking on voucher programs
  • Role-based access control for associates and managers
  • Shopify established as a viable replacement for legacy enterprise systems
  • Reusable enterprise components and API framework adaptable to other retailers

The custom apps and API framework built for Work World can be adapted for other enterprise retailers. That is the broader point: Shopify's ceiling for a 30-store specialty retailer is not set by the platform, it is set by whether someone is willing to build the enterprise layer properly on top of it.

“"Red Van took a look at our tech stack and then built an application that does exactly what we need: ERP generated Purchase Orders flow through to the POS which allows for easy receiving via ASN or Scan. The application also does inventory transfers, full and partial cycle counts, label printing, and has a security matrix that allows us to give associates and managers the access they need. It's awesome!"”

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify work for an enterprise retailer?

Yes, with the right extensions. Work World runs more than 30 stores on Shopify and Shopify POS, with a custom voucher application, NetSuite integration, and retail operations extensions Red Van built on top. Out of the box, Shopify would not have covered those requirements. Extended properly, it replaced the legacy systems.

How do you integrate Shopify with NetSuite?

Red Van built Work World an ERP-agnostic API layer so Shopify customizations communicate reliably with NetSuite, with Celigo managing real-time data mappings and synchronizations. Building the layer ERP-agnostic means the integration is not locked to NetSuite if the ERP ever changes.

Can Shopify POS handle cycle counts and purchase orders?

Not natively. Shopify includes basic tools for purchase orders, transfers, and adjustments but does not connect them to external systems, and Shopify POS does not support cycle counts or advanced shipping notices. Red Van built those workflows for Work World, including approval processes, packing slips, status tracking, and label printing.

Can a corporate voucher program run through Shopify?

Through a custom application, yes. Red Van built Work World a voucher app supporting varied discount structures, product restrictions, bulk distribution, revocation, and detailed reporting, connected to NetSuite in real time and redeemable both online and in store. The reporting and liability tracking logic is what makes it workable at scale.
