In January 2026, Google and Shopify announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) at NRF. Salesforce followed days later with their own UCP integration for Agentforce Commerce. If you're running enterprise commerce on either platform, this one matters.

 


What Is UCP?

UCP is an open standard that gives merchants, AI agents, and platforms a shared language from product discovery through checkout. Before UCP, every AI platform needed a custom integration with your commerce stack. UCP eliminates that. Merchants declare what they support, agents negotiate the difference, and your products become discoverable and purchasable inside AI conversations on Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and more. No rebuilding your stack for each one.

You stay the merchant of record. Your fulfillment rules, your brand, your customer relationship.

UCP already has backing from Walmart, Target, Wayfair, Stripe, Mastercard, Visa, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and many others. This is the infrastructure layer for the next era of commerce.

Why It Matters Now

During Cyber Week 2025, AI-driven traffic converted at 9x the rate of social media. AI assistant traffic grew 119% year-over-year in the first half of 2025. The shift from "search, click, buy" to "ask, converse, buy" is already underway. The brands whose products AI agents can find, understand, and transact will win.

 

If You're On Shopify

Shopify co-built UCP with Google, giving Shopify merchants a head start. Agentic Storefronts are now active by default for eligible US merchants. Your products can be discovered and purchased natively inside Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Copilot, all managed from your Shopify Admin.

Worth noting: UCP is only as good as your product data. AI agents look for structured attributes like size, material, use case, shipping constraints, and subscription terms. Thin catalog data is now a conversion problem, not just an SEO problem.

 

If You're On SFCC

Salesforce announced native UCP support for Agentforce Commerce in January 2026. SFCC merchants can now enable native checkout on Google AI surfaces without large custom development investments, while maintaining full control over merchandising, fulfillment, and post-purchase journeys.

Salesforce also supports the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) for ChatGPT and MCP for broader agent interoperability. The protocol landscape is moving fast, and sequencing your investment across these channels matters.
